Electrical Safety Tips for Ontario Homeowners

A practical seasonal checklist for keeping your home electrically safe year-round — from spring storm prep to winter heating system checks.

Electrical safety is not something most homeowners think about until something goes wrong — a tripped breaker, a flickering light, or worse, the smell of burning from behind a wall. But a few simple habits, checked seasonally, can prevent the vast majority of residential electrical emergencies. This guide provides a practical, season-by-season checklist for Ontario homeowners.

Spring: post-winter inspection

Ontario winters are brutal on electrical systems. Freeze-thaw cycles can shift outdoor junction boxes, crack weatherproof covers, and damage underground wiring. In spring, walk the exterior of your home and inspect all outdoor outlets, light fixtures, and junction boxes for visible damage. Test every outdoor GFCI outlet by pressing the TEST button — it should trip immediately.

Spring is also the time to check your sump pump circuit. If your sump pump shares a circuit with other basement loads, it may not have the power it needs during heavy spring rains. A dedicated circuit for your sump pump is an inexpensive upgrade that protects against basement flooding.

Summer: air conditioning and storm season

Air conditioning puts significant demand on your electrical system. If your AC unit causes lights to dim when it cycles on, your panel may be approaching its capacity limit. Have a licensed electrician check your panel loading before the peak of summer. Additionally, invest in whole-home surge protection — Ontario's summer thunderstorms produce power surges that can destroy electronics, HVAC control boards, and appliances in an instant.

  • Test all GFCI outlets monthly — bathrooms, kitchen, garage, outdoor
  • Check that your panel breakers are properly labelled so you can find circuits quickly in an emergency
  • Ensure outdoor outlets have in-use weatherproof covers, not just flip-up covers
  • Clear vegetation away from your electrical meter and service entrance
  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries

Fall: heating season preparation

Before you turn on your furnace for the season, check that the furnace disconnect switch is functional and accessible. If you use portable electric heaters, ensure each one is plugged directly into a wall outlet — never into an extension cord or power bar. Electric space heaters are the leading cause of residential electrical fires in Canada, and nearly all of those fires involve extension cords or overloaded circuits.

Winter: holiday lighting and generator safety

Holiday lighting creates a seasonal spike in electrical fires. Use only CSA-approved outdoor lights on outdoor circuits. Do not daisy-chain more than three strings of lights. Use timers rather than leaving lights on overnight. And never run outdoor extension cords through windows or under doors — the pinch point damages the insulation and creates a fire hazard.

If you use a portable generator during winter storms, never operate it indoors or in an attached garage — carbon monoxide poisoning is lethal. A properly installed transfer switch and standby generator eliminates the risks associated with portable generators entirely.

One in four residential electrical fires in Ontario involves equipment that was working but installed or used improperly. Safety is not about buying better equipment — it is about proper installation and responsible use.
